Biography

I am working as Associate Professor – Microbiology and Head, Agriculture Department with additional charge of Principal, S.S.D. College of Professional Studies, Bhokhra, Bathinda since 25 June, 2013 to continue till date. I have done Masters of Science in Microbiology and Ph.D. in Life Sciences in the subject of Botany with work on plant based antimicrobials. I have been in teaching and research for almost 18 years and have taught both at graduate and masters level in various subjects in the department of Microbiology, Biotechnology, Microbial and Food Technology and Bioinformatics and have publications in peer reviewed Journals and books of International/National repute. I have participated as well as presented research papers in various International and National conferences, seminars and workshops. I have done extensive study on plant based antimicrobial compounds and their potential use as herbal medicines as against synthetic or semi-synthetic medicines often having various side effects. I have guided 48 students of M.Sc. and M.Phil. in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Food Technology for their project work independently and successfully in varied topics related to Extraction of plant based oils and compounds and their antimicrobial properties, Biodegradation of pollutants, Enzyme production, Bacteriocin production, Microbial and heavy metal contamination and detection in sewage irrigated crops etc. These research studies have been carried out through newly isolated microbial isolates. Apart from teaching and research I am working as convener/coordinator of various societies as well as member of various organizations working on various professional and other aspects of life including social and environmental well being. Some of them include National Youth Parliament Program under Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, GoI; National Commission for Women, GoI; Youth Services Department etc.

Research Interest

Although research itself fascinates me, still I have interest in antimicrobials of plant origin, biodegradation, enzyme production, heavy metal and microbial contamination of food and related products, bacteriocins, Environmental aspects etc.
